Stop and Search Shadowed

Here are the live tweets from our action last week. We disrupted an Immigration Police or Fence Fuzz stop and search operation. Using our Stop and Search App we are able to anticipate Stop and Search locations targeting the undocumented. This time we used a new technique, invasive filming, shadowing of Immigration Police and rapid dispersal. We managed to identify the plain clothes Fence Fuzz and this made our job very easy and killed off the Fence Fuzz’s Stop and Search Operation for that day. Read below to see how it worked out.

Today we have a small action to disrupt a stop and search.,13/01/2015 11:40 am

This time we are going to do some very simple and very annoying for the Fence Fuzz.,13/01/2015 11:41 am

We are going to film the Fence Fuzz in action and close up. A number of volunteers have signed up to film the Fence Fuzz.,13/01/2015 11:42 am

Using the Stop & Search App we are able to pinpoint the likely location for stop and searches targeting the undocumented.,13/01/2015 11:43 am

The Fence Fuzz/Border Police target metro stations to arrest “illegal immigrants”. They identify people looking “nervous” or “unsure”.,13/01/2015 11:44 am

This is language used by the Border Police, but it really means there targets for stop and search are people who look foreign.,13/01/2015 11:45 am

In our stop and search actions we want to empower people stopped by the Border Police.,13/01/2015 11:46 am

We want to tell them they do not have to answer any questions and that they can simply walk away.,13/01/2015 11:47 am

We will tell people being stopped by the Border Police that: 1. Immigration checks cannot be speculative.,13/01/2015 11:48 am

2. They cannot stop someone on the basis of race,13/01/2015 11:50 am

3. Anyone can just walk away. There’s no evidence to detain if they don’t even know your name.,13/01/2015 11:51 am

Our volunteers filming will also advise someone being stopped by the Fence Fuzz to walk away.,13/01/2015 11:52 am

By filming the border police we want to put them in the uncomfortable position of having their behaviour scrutinised.,13/01/2015 11:52 am

From our last experience we saw that the Fence Fuzz with any disturbance tried to identify and stop anyone disrupting a stop and search.,13/01/2015 11:53 am

This time we will keep rotating people, keeping them active. We know the Fence Fuzz resources will be limited at most 10 staff.,13/01/2015 11:54 am

We have twenty volunteers, 2 for every border border police-person.,13/01/2015 11:56 am

Volunteers come from the PLU + Crazy Eye and Roof Bolter (who helped us on a previous action) who think they are safe.,13/01/2015 11:57 am

The group live in a large squat complex so know and trust each other and should work well together.,13/01/2015 11:57 am

We film in 2s. When the border police stop someone we film in 2s.,13/01/2015 11:58 am

If the border policeman breaks away and starts to question a PLU volunteer the PLU volunteer puts their phone away.,13/01/2015 11:59 am

The 2nd volunteer keeps filming. The first volunteer then leaves (as they can’t be stopped, thier right toleave).,13/01/2015 12:00 pm

If more Fence Fuzz enter the scene they will be followed by more volunteers filming and so it goes on.,13/01/2015 12:01 pm

When the fence fuzz engage a volunteer the volunteer then puts their mobile away and walks away while a new volunteer is filming.,13/01/2015 12:02 pm

Let’s see how it goes. The action is intended to be frustrating and disorientating for the Fence Fuzz.,13/01/2015 12:03 pm

We expect the Fence Fuzz to arrive in around 10-20 minutes at the metro station, let’s see if they turn up.,13/01/2015 12:04 pm

I have just spotted a blue utility van and the border police have just got out.,13/01/2015 12:11 pm
Second van has arrived so it looks we were spot on with our prediction of a Stop and Search here today.,13/01/2015 12:12 pm

It will take them around 20 minutes to setup I guess. They will get their comms ready and spotters.,13/01/2015 12:13 pm

We take some stills of the plain clothed and uniformed staff so we can identify them later on.,13/01/2015 12:14 pm

However we have matched up each border policeperson with two volunteers,,13/01/2015 12:15 pm

this makes it clear and easy to follow our game plan with minimal communication.,13/01/2015 12:16 pm

The three extras in the game are myself @ImmigrantY and @Immigrant_Z who intervene if necessary and keep an eye on the whole scene.,13/01/2015 12:17 pm

For the next few minutes we will be matching the fence fuzz to the PLU volunteers.,13/01/2015 12:18 pm

We can see the whole scene from a caf? on the side of the entrance to the metro station.,13/01/2015 12:19 pm

The Fence Fuzz are moving into position and now we’re moving. 4 PLU volunteers are matching the two uniformed border police who will stop.,13/01/2015 12:20 pm

Another 2 PLU volunteers are matched with a plain clothed border police spotter at the top of the entrance to the station.,13/01/2015 12:21 pm

We will hit the plain clothed spotter first this will disrupt the whole border police operation.,13/01/2015 12:22 pm

Border police spotters are more experienced and direct the uniformed border police as to which persons to target for a stop and searches.,13/01/2015 12:23 pm

Ok this guys is really pissed. He is pissed off his cover has been broken.,13/01/2015 12:24 pm

One of the plain clothed guys is really harassing the PLU volunteer “Wendy”. He has spotted Wendy filming him but not “Greg”.,13/01/2015 12:25 pm

She has put away her phone as the plain clothed Fence Fuzzman approaches her.,13/01/2015 12:26 pm

“Greg” is now making himself visible as “Wendy” slips into the crowd.,13/01/2015 12:27 pm

The plain clothed is now approaching “Greg” and is radioing probably for assistance.,13/01/2015 12:28 pm

Ok a plain clothed border policewoman is now approaching “Greg” and we have 2 PLU volunteers on her.,13/01/2015 12:29 pm

She approaches “Greg” and the first border policeman.,13/01/2015 12:30 pm

“Greg” puts away his phone and the plain clothed “Fence Fuzz” now see Crazy Eye filming them. “Greg” just slips away.,13/01/2015 12:31 pm

The Fence Fuzz are now lost. They start to approach Crazy Eye and she puts her phone away.,13/01/2015 12:32 pm

Roof Bolter is now filming and the Fence Fuzz now see him and Crazy eye is gone.,13/01/2015 12:33 pm

The plain clothed are now communicating with their colleagues. They are withdrawing back to their vans.,13/01/2015 12:34 pm

It looks like the stop and search is over before it has even started.,13/01/2015 12:35 pm

We ask all the PLU volunteers to leave the metro and away from the surveillance cameras in all directions.,13/01/2015 12:36 pm

The Fence Fuzz seem to be just waiting by their vans for instructions. They are just clearly confused and not sure how to handle our action.,13/01/2015 12:37 pm

A cop car has just pulled up. The cops are talking with the plain clothed Fence Fuzz.,13/01/2015 12:38 pm

The cops don’t seem to enthusiastic about chasing ghosts around a metro station.,13/01/2015 12:39 pm

The cops have just had a quick wander around for appearances sake and walked back to their vehicle.,13/01/2015 12:40 pm

The blue Fence Fuzz vans and cop cars have just left.,13/01/2015 12:41 pm

That was it. I think the action is over. I will hang around for an hour more just to observe.,13/01/2015 12:42 pm

A successful and simple action. We are pretty happy with how smooth that went.,13/01/2015 12:43 pm
